Useful reviews:

Yeah, Effective C++ is really a *must read* if you want to improve your current knowledge of C++. However, although interesting, I don’t find this book a must because it explains things you will not probably use in your real life as a programmer. If you already have Effective C++, both Stroustup, and/or Coplien’s “Advanced C++ Programming Styles and Idioms” and/or Murray’s “C++ Strategies and Tactics”, I don’t think you should get it unless you do not sleep at nights or you want to know absolutely everything about C++. However, it is a good book, so if you are not concerned about money, get it and read it, but get first the other ones I said.

Nihongo Sou matome N2 bunpou is like many others written for JLPT prep: it’s meant to be used by people of various native languages (Chinese, Korean, and English), and thus it is not calibrated to best teach native English speakers; this gives it the flavor of one of those so-so product manuals that has German, French and Spanish translations, but won’t tell you clearly which button to push to make the fool thing work.
Each chapter gives examples of new grammar points and translations of those sentences, but what is missing is: definitions of the grammar points standing alone (a new Japanese word is introduced but there is no cluster of translations given; thus you are left guessing which elements in the English translations of the example sentences cover the new term); translations of the daily and weekly quiz sentences (you are only given the multiple choice answer, so if you don’t “get” the sentence, you’re out of luck); usage explanations or guides (there is a little bit of this but more is needed). Using this book and only this book to study can be very frustrating. Fluent friends, dictionary/sentence web sites such as Jisho.org, and other grammar books can help make this book more useful. The book’s content is presented in an orderly, neat, and attractive fashion, but I wonder if there is a better, less self-torturing book out there.

Personally, I think the example sentences do enough to explain the usage of the grammar. If there are cases where the student still doesn’t understand, a myriad more examples can typically be found on the internet.
The book is organized into weeks, with each of the first 6 days having a theme that generally revolves around related grammar points. On subsequent days, you check your answers on the previous chapter, and on the 7th day of the cycle, you take a timed test.
Short, sweet, organized.

みんなの日本語2 Minna no nihongo II textbook

Minna no nihongo II is good at packing a lot of Japanese into a small space! If possible, you should get both the English and Japanese versions, however, since they both depend on each other. It’s not the most fantastic Japanese book ever, but it’s great for a class, or for some other guided instruction. Much better than any American textbooks I’ve seen.
Every chapter starts with vocabulary, then a skit using the new words, as well as some good examples and exercises. The illustrations are cute. Also, the appendices are very useful in a pinch.
Then read this book. For those in the know, this book series are used at actual Japanese universities for a reason: they work. When I went to Okinawa Japan, I studied from this 25-lesson book and the English translation piece. If you want something that will give you a solid commmand of the language, then get this, the Minna no Nihongo worksheets and the translations. I would just go through this book with a Japanese friend to supplement the CDs (warning they’re expensive).
You will be exploring life through the eyes of Mike Smith as he continues to work for his Japanese company and continues to make friends. There is a lot a humor in the lessons that make this an interesting self study piece. It is probably better for a class room, but I would use this to review what I know from time to time. It will go over high beginner to low intermediate Japanese grammatical forms and introduce you to about a thousand new vocabulary words. From there you are expected to be able to command the language at a conversational level.
Want to pass the JLPT level N4 and first portion of N3? Pick this book up along with some Kanzen Master books and you’re good to go. You’re words will flow like fluid with enough pratice.

Minna no nihongo 1 textbook

Minna no nihongo 1 textbook treats you like an adult who needs to speak in Japan. Each lesson introduces a few sentence patterns (i.e. grammar), gives relevant vocabulary, shows how to use it in useful situations, and provides lots of opportunity for practice.
The vocabulary is excellent. It is aggressive: it requires us to learn about 50 new words per lesson, and reuses the vocab from previous lessons. It is also well chosen: the vocab logically matches the sentence patterns for that lesson so that we can learn and practice them together. But it doesn’t ask us to memorize exhaustive themed categories (animals, etc…). It recognizes that many adults need to talk about “reports” more often than “horses”.
Minna No Nihongo uses a lot of pairwork, and I have found it most effective studying in a class with a teacher or at least with a dedicated partner.
The book itself is unique. I’ve never seen another like it. It is written for foreigners in Japan so it is written completely in japanese. Then students can buy the accompanying translation and grammatical notes (recommended) in the language of their choice (English, Korean, Chinese, etc.).

Nihongo sou matome N3 bunpou  is to be used as a six-week study guide. Each day, you will study three to four grammatical items found on the JLPT. Every week, from Day 1 to Day 6, you will study grammatical items which are similar in form and usage. On Day 7, you will check to see if you have learned them by doing the “Jissen Mondai” (Practice Test), that is in JLPT format. English translation is provided to explanations and examples sentences.
Some helpful reviews :

I just bought  Nihongo sou matome N3 bunpou  in japan and it is terrrrrrrible. It’s like the author is deathly allergic to explanations and clear examples. I rage every time I pick up this book to study. They will introduce a new grammar point and have absolutely NO description of what it is or how it’s used. They just throw up a couple of examples that seem to adhere to no pattern and giggle to themselves as you flail and try to grasp what they’re hinting at. I defy you to learn from this book without wanting burn it in a hobo trash fire (because regular fire is too good for it).
I’m giving it 2 stars instead of 1 because I use it more as an outline of what to study than an actual reference. I read up on each grammar point from different sources then come back to this book and it make so much more sense.

I think that the N3 grammar book was a little too much for you. When you get into more advance Japanese textbooks, there is a little explanation because you should be able to understand how the grammar point is used and what situations it applies in. I suggest you used N4 grammar because it seems in your review that you are not mentally prepare to take the N3.

Everything you learn in Nihongo sou matome N3 goi you’ll actually see in real life if you’re in Japan. Since it’s a vocabulary book, get yourself a good flashcard program for your computer and continue to review the words until they finally stick. A word of warning though, you may have to look some words up in a dictionary to fully understand the Japanese word. I’ve found a lot of the definitions to be vague.
I’ve found the book to be good in preparing you for the JLPT. It has daily quizzes and then a “end of week” quiz that tests what you’ve learned the past week. Everything is set up exactly as the JLPT so you won’t have any surprises.

This book, approved by ETS (the company that conducts TOEIC), is a very well-organized and thorough TOEIC Strategies and Method book. But there are several major issues that make this book only “Good”, not “Great”.

STRUCTURE:

“Tactics” is divided into 28 Units. Each Unit focuses on a specific TOEIC strategy. For example, Unit 12 helps you build your “Gerund vs. Infinitive” skills, and Unit 18 talks about how Part 4 (Short Talks) uses numbers to confuse you and pick wrong answers. Each Unit also has a short quiz to practice those strategies.
Each Unit also has a “Language Building” section, where you can build your Business English–it uses language quizzes like crosswords and “fill-in-the-blank” questions. In the back of the book, is a “Word list and Quizzes” section, which gives definitions of all the words found in the Language Building sections.
NOTE: You can download transcripts of the quizzes/activities from Oxford University Press for free, but…this book DOES NOT INCLUDE TAPES OR CDs! You have to buy these separately!

POSITIVES:

The Strategies and Methods are very good to know–they are very similar to the techniques I teach in my class. Because each Unit has a practice quiz that focuses on that Unit’s strategy, you can see how these techniques can help you. If you understand the strategies in this book, you will avoid almost all the tricks used on the TOEIC.
Each Unit has a great variety of skill-building activities to improve your understanding of English grammar, Business English, and TOEIC test questions. Because there are different kinds of activities, you have a better chance to learning and remembering the strategy/grammar/vocabulary.
This book will help anyone, at any English language skill level, understand how to “Think like a Test-maker”. This is one of the most important skills to build before taking the test–it will help you spot wrong answers more quickly. For this reason alone, I recommend getting this book–no other book at Amazon gives you these Strategies.

NEGATIVES:

“Tactics” is very poorly organized. For example, instead of putting all Photograph strategies together, they are divided into Units 1, 8, 15 and 22–this is true for all the different parts of the TOEIC.
Hidden on page 169 is a “Glossary of Terms”–words often used when talking about English grammar or test preparation–why is this at the end of the book, and not the beginning, where students more easily find it?
This book does not come with CDs! You have to go to Oxford University Press and order them directly from them–which is likely very expensive (much more expensive than Amazon).
This book does not include any complete tests. In order to practice these strategies more, you will want to buy “Target TOEIC”

BOTTOM LINE:

This book was designed for use in a classroom, with a teacher who has bought the CDs. Buy this book ONLY to practice strategies and methods. However, you will need another book (such as “Target TOEIC”) to practice timed tests.
